Supply Chain Visibility Starts with Physical Identification

Much is being written about supply chain visibility, digital twins, AI and better data.

All of that has a place. But there is still a very practical layer sitting underneath it.

Before a system can track a product, pallet, batch, component or asset, somebody must identify it properly in the first place.

That might be a barcode label, an SSCC, a batch number, a QR code, a GS1 Data Matrix or simply a durable asset label that stays where it is supposed to stay.

It sounds basic, but it matters.

If a barcode becomes unreadable, a label lifts off in a freezer, or an asset identifier disappears after six months, the problem is no longer just the label. The link between the physical item and the information in the system has been broken.

We see this in all sorts of applications.

Raw materials coming into a manufacturing site need to stay connected to the right batch information. Pallets leaving the site need to carry the correct logistics data. Reusable containers may need a permanent identity, but different information attached to each movement.

The systems sitting behind all of this can be very sophisticated. The physical identification often isn’t.

And that is usually where problems start.

At Warehouse ID, we tend to work backwards from the application rather than starting with the label itself.
  • What are you identifying?
  • How long does it need to last?
  • What surface is it going onto?
  • Who is scanning it?
  • At what distance?
  • What happens if the label fails?

Those questions normally tell us far more than simply asking what size label is required.

Supply chain visibility is a big subject, but at ground level it starts with something very simple:

the right information needs to stay attached to the right thing.

That is what good industrial identification does.
